Icod de los Vinos by Car — Dragon Tree, Lava Cave & Hidden Beach in One Day

Most visitors to Icod de los Vinos arrive on a coach, spend 30 minutes looking at a tree, and leave. They’re not wrong to come — the tree is extraordinary. But they’ve missed two-thirds of what makes this small town on Tenerife’s northwest coast one of the most genuinely surprising stops on the island.

Driving to Icod de los Vinos

Icod de los Vinos is three extraordinary experiences in one municipality: a legendary ancient tree, an underground world beneath a volcanic landscape, and a hidden black-sand beach sheltered by cliffs at the bottom of a ravine. Culture, nature, and beach in a single destination — and the only way to connect all three properly is by rental car.

This guide covers the full picture: how to get there, where to park, what each attraction actually involves, how much it costs, and the combination days that make Icod into more than a quick stop between Garachico and Puerto de la Cruz.

🛣️ How to Get to Icod de los Vinos by Car

Icod de los Vinos sits on the north coast of Tenerife, approximately 45 minutes from Santa Cruz, 20 minutes from Puerto de la Cruz, and about an hour from the south coast resorts via the TF-1 and TF-5 motorways.

Starting Point Route Distance Drive Time
TFN Airport TF-5 west ~30 km 30–35 min
Puerto de la Cruz TF-5 west ~20 km 20–25 min
Garachico TF-42 east ~10 km 12–15 min
Santa Cruz / La Laguna TF-5 west ~55 km 45–50 min
TFS Airport TF-1 north → TF-5 west ~90 km 80–90 min
Costa Adeje / Las Américas TF-1 north → TF-5 west ~88 km 75–85 min
La Orotava TF-5 west ~15 km 18–22 min

The TF-5 motorway connects all the northern towns efficiently. The drive from Puerto de la Cruz is simple and the signage for Parque del Drago begins before you enter the town.

Important: Icod de los Vinos is a very hilly town with a lot of traffic. The town centre is steep and the streets are narrow in places. Follow signs for “Parque del Drago” or “Parking del Drago” and don’t try to navigate into the historic core without a specific destination in mind.

🅿️ Parking in Icod de los Vinos

Parking Option Distance to Drago Cost Hours Notes
Parking del Drago 250 metres Paid (nominal) Mon–Sat 7:30am–9pm, Sun 9am–9pm Most recommended — right next to all centre attractions
Street parking near Plaza de la Iglesia 0–2 min walk Free (white lines) No restrictions Limited — fills fast near the church square
Roadside on TF-42 approach 5–10 min walk Free No restrictions Always available — slight walk into town

The Parking del Drago underground car park is the most practical option — nominal charge, centrally located, and directly next to both the Drago tree park and the church square. Follow signs for “Parque del Drago” from the TF-5 exit.

🐉 El Drago Milenario — The World’s Oldest and Largest Dragon Tree

The Drago Milenario is the reason most people come to Icod de los Vinos — and it justifies the trip entirely. It is the largest and oldest known specimen of Dracaena draco in the world, declared a national monument in 1917, and it adorns the coat of arms of Icod de los Vinos.

The tree is extraordinary in person in a way that photographs don’t capture. The trunk has a circumference that requires multiple people with arms outstretched to encircle it. The canopy spreads in a shape unique to old dragon trees — a flat, umbrella-like crown of waxy blue-green leaves. Estimates of its age range from 800 to over 1,000 years — the “milenario” claim is credible enough that nobody disputes it seriously.

Visiting Parque del Drago:

 • Adults: €5 | Students and pensioners: €3 | Children under 8: €2.50 | Residents: free
 • The paid entry includes close access to the tree, the botanical garden with endemic Canarian flora, and a Guanche cave recreation with historical context
 • Allow 45–60 minutes for the full experience

The free view option: You can see the Drago Milenario for free from the church square (Plaza de la Iglesia) right next to the park — there’s a spot where the wall is lowered, allowing a clear view without a ticket. Many visitors are satisfied with this view alone. Whether the €5 is worth it depends on how much you want the botanical garden and closer access.

Timing: To avoid crowds and capture the best light, aim for early mornings or late afternoons. Tour coaches typically arrive between 10am and 1pm. Arriving at 9am versus 11am is a significantly different experience.

⛪ Plaza de la Iglesia and the San Marcos Church

The Iglesia de San Marcos dominates the main square with one of the finest church facades in the north of Tenerife — its towers visible from the lower approach road long before you park. The interior features a Mudéjar-style wooden ceiling and a Gothic altarpiece that predates most of the island’s colonial architecture.

The square itself is a genuinely local space — residents having coffee at the kiosk, children around the fountain, enormous Indian laurel trees providing shade. From the square you get the free elevated view of the Drago tree rising above the park wall — one of the most satisfying no-cost viewpoints on the island.

🌋 La Cueva del Viento — Europe’s Largest Lava Tube

This is Icod’s second extraordinary attraction and the one most visitors completely miss.

La Cueva del Viento is Europe’s largest lava tube — 18 km long, across 3 levels, formed 27,000 years ago — an unmissable underground visit.

The cave was created when a massive volcanic eruption sent lava flowing downhill. The outer surface cooled and hardened; the molten rock inside continued flowing outward, leaving a hollow tube of extraordinary scale. Walking through it is a genuinely different experience from any surface attraction on the island.

🏖️ Playa de San Marcos — The Hidden Cliff Beach

Five minutes by car from the town centre, Playa de San Marcos is a cliff-sheltered black sand beach that most visitors to Icod de los Vinos never find.

The beach sits at the bottom of a dramatic ravine — dark volcanic cliffs on three sides, the ocean on the fourth. The sheltered position makes it calmer than the exposed north coast beaches. Seafood restaurants line the small promenade above the sand — fresh fish, local wine, ocean views.

By car: Follow signs toward the coast from the town centre — the road descends steeply through the ravine. Small car park at beach level fills fast in summer — arrive before 10am or after 4pm.

This is the beach the coaches never stop at. By rental car it’s a 5-minute detour that transforms Icod from a tree stop into a full day destination.

🍷 Malvasía Wine — What the Name Means

The “Vinos” in Icod de los Vinos isn’t decoration. The town has produced Malvasía — a sweet, amber-coloured dessert wine — since the 16th century, when it was one of Tenerife’s most valuable exports, shipped across Europe and the New World. Shakespeare mentions Canarian wine in Henry IV. Several of the old wine cellars in the historic centre still produce and sell locally.

A glass of Malvasía with local cheese after the Drago visit is the correct way to close a morning in Icod. Look for Bodega El Drago near the park entrance.

🙋 Frequently Asked Questions — Icod de los Vinos by Car

How far is Icod de los Vinos from the south of Tenerife?

Approximately 88–90 km from the main southern resorts — around 75–85 minutes via TF-1 and TF-5. It works best as part of a full north coast day combined with Garachico and/or Puerto de la Cruz rather than a standalone trip from the south.

Is El Drago Milenario worth visiting?

Yes — the tree is genuinely extraordinary in person in a way photographs don’t capture. Entry to Parque del Drago is €5 for adults. If budget is tight, the free view from Plaza de la Iglesia church square is also excellent — a spot where the wall is lowered gives a clear, unobstructed view of the tree without any ticket.

Can you see the Drago Milenario for free?

Yes — from the church square (Plaza de la Iglesia), a lowered section of wall gives a clear view of the tree. Many visitors are satisfied with this free view alone. The €5 park entry adds the botanical garden and Guanche cave if you want the fuller experience.

What is La Cueva del Viento?

Europe’s largest lava tube — 18 km long, 3 levels, formed 27,000 years ago. Guided tours only, approximately 75 minutes, around €22 for adults. Must be booked in advance. The cave maintains a constant 16°C — bring a warm layer.

Where is the best place to park in Icod de los Vinos?

Parking del Drago — a paid but nominal-charge underground car park right next to all the centre’s attractions. Follow signs for “Parque del Drago” from the TF-5 exit. Open Mon–Sat 7:30am–9pm, Sun 9am–9pm.

How long do you need in Icod de los Vinos?

Half a day for Parque del Drago, the church square, and lunch. A full day if you add La Cueva del Viento (must book in advance) and Playa San Marcos. It combines naturally with Garachico (10 min west) for a half day each.

Is Playa de San Marcos worth visiting?

Yes — a cliff-sheltered black-sand beach 5 minutes from the Drago tree, with calmer water than the exposed north coast beaches and good seafood restaurants. Almost no tourists because it’s off the coach route. By rental car it’s a trivial detour that transforms the day completely.
